On Wednesday July 19 the wolf from the Bear Forest in Ouwehand Zoo Rhenen died after a medical check. The wolf was the only remaining animal from a herd of four brothers. The wolf had reached the respectable age of 15, which is quite old for a wolf. Lately the wolf did not walk well any more. Scans revealed that the left elbow was affected by arthrosis. To prevent any suffering, it was deceided to put the wolf to sleep. In the near future a new herd will be placed in the Bear Forest. Wolves and bears stimulate each other, which leads to more natural behaviour in both species. In the wild wolves and bears also share the same habitat.
